Tinhorn Creek Pinot Noir is Back

Varietal Series Pinot Noir.  Typically a July release, Tinhorn Creek chose not to release the Pinot Noir last summer.  Rather than release it according to schedule, Tinhorn decided that the Pinot Noir would benefit from an additional year of bottle aging and held it back to give it more time to be at it’s best for their customers.

On making this decision Sandra Oldfield, President & CEO of Tinhorn Creek, says “When we tasted the Pinot Noir from our in-house library, we found our Pinot Noir showed a much greater character after an additional year of aging. We want our customers to be able to experience these added layers of complexity for themselves, so we made the difficult decision of holding the wine back for an additional year of aging in the bottle.”

This was not the only change to the Pinot Noir program at Tinhorn Creek. A decision was also made to make an Oldfield Series Pinot Noir in addition to the Varietal Series Pinot Noir. The difference between these two Pinot Noirs can found in vineyard practices, oak programs, but most significantly in the bottle aging time. The Varietal Series Pinot Noir will have two years of bottle aging before it is released and the Oldfield Series Pinot Noir will have three years.

The Tinhorn Creek Pinot Noir 2008 will be released tomorrow (July 1, 2011) and the Oldfield Series Pinot Noir 2008 will be released in 2012.

Sandra Oldfield Named CEO & President of Tinhorn Creek

The Tinhorn Creek Board of Directors is pleased to announce the appointment of Sandra Oldfield to the position of President and CEO of Tinhorn Creek Vineyards effective June 16, 2011.  Sandra will retain the

title and responsibilities of Winemaker. As president of Tinhorn Creek, Oldfield will be responsible for overall strategic direction of the winery.

Oldfield brings 20 years of experience and personal passion in the wine industry. She joined Tinhorn Creek as Winemaker in 1995, rising to serve as the Chief Operating Officer in 2008.  She has spearheaded several innovative projects in the last few years such as leading Tinhorn to become the first Carbon Neutral winery in Canada, just one of the initiatives under Tinhorn Creek’s sustainability and stewardship program.  This year the company achieved an impressive 28% reduction of Green House Gas (GHG) emissions or tonnes of CO2 Equivalents over last year.

Also under Oldfield’s leadership, Tinhorn recently became the first small employer in British Columbia to become COR (Certificate of Recognition) certified in BC’s Food and Beverage Industry.

The certification came after an 18 month long process that was aimed at making all aspects of the business (vineyard, hospitality, winery, production, and offices) safer for all employees. COR certification is granted by the Food Industry Occupational Safety Association (FIOSA) of BC.

A native of California, winemaker and owner Sandra Oldfield arrived at Tinhorn Creek from Santa Rosa, California in time for the 1995 crush.  Since then, she has taken the production from 1,000 cases to more than 35,000 cases.  She gained her early experience at Rodney Strong Vineyards in Sonoma, CA.  Before leaving California, Sandra had been studying enology at the University of California at Davis (UC Davis).  She put her studies on hold while her time and energy went to getting the winery up and running.  She then resumed her winemaking studies (along with studying Canadian history).  Her efforts were rewarded in the spring of 2002 with a master’s degree in Enology from UC Davis and Canadian citizenship in October 2002.  Sandra, her husband, Kenn Oldfield, and their daughter Melody live in a house perched at top of the Tinhorn Creek winery vineyards.

k-os is a Toronto-bred emcee/vocalist whose socially aware raps and heartfelt melodies have put him at the forefront of the generation of rap artists who are pushing the limits of hip hop culture (i.e. Andre 3000 of Outkast, Missy Elliot). He has even added to his musical repertoire by playing guitar and piano on a few of the new songs. Much like Lauryn Hill, the artist he's often compared to, his music is a testament to his rare ability to harmonize and emcee, ignoring any creative straitjackets imposed on him by narrow rap or R&B categorizations. Though k-os may be compared to many great artists, his versatility makes it almost impossible to truly compare him to any other musician.

A Stunning 28% Reduction on Greenhouse Gas Emission

Producer of highly acclaimed, award winning wines, Tinhorn Creek Vineyards continues to further sustainability practices by achieving an impressive 28% reduction of Green House Gas (GHG) emissions or

tonnes of CO2 Equivalents over last year.  The May 9th carbon inventory submitted by Tinhorn Creek was approved by Climate Smart, who help businesses measure and reduce their carbon footprint while cutting costs.

Highlights:
•    41% reduction overall in waste sent to landfill.  More waste was sent to be recycled than to the landfill for the first time in the winery’s history.
•    32% reduction in electricity usage in all areas of the vineyard and winery buildings.  Some of this (approx. 15%) was possibly due to a more temperate year, but the remainder was due to efficiencies such as a lights out policy in areas where work is not occurring.
•    26% reduction is Green House Gas emissions due mainly to the use of bio-diesel fuel and more efficient use of farm tractors.
•    38% reduction of paper usage due to the use of double-sided copies, use of paperless faxes and less printing overall.

Every year since 2009, COO and Winemaker Sandra Oldfield calculates the total greenhouse gas emissions produced by the winery, targets areas to cut emissions with a continued effort towards 100% carbon neutral practices, and finally, offsets the carbon footprint with the help of Vancouver based Offsetters, Canada’s premier provider of high quality solutions for individuals and organizations seeking to reduce their climate impact.

Tinhorn Creek’s 2011 goal is a multi-pronged approach:
•    Energy efficient upgrades--such as retrofitting facilities with LED lighting following a lighting audit.
•    Reductions in employee travel--the company encourages employees to seek practical alternatives when considering their travel needs.  For example, Winemaker Sandra Oldfield participates in ‘Virtual Tastings’ with media and wine buyers.
•    Incorporating 100% of Miradoro organic waste into our grape waste compost program
•    The winery is embarking on a program to convert all 130 planted acres to drip irrigation.

Tinhorn Creek Vineyards has been a vanguard in responsible practices since its inception in 1994 and has been recognized by The Land Conservancy as a partner for their ongoing stewardship. They developed systems with South Okanagan-Similkameen Stewardship Program that has led to placing snake fences around the vineyard property to protect visitors, staff and snakes. Tinhorn Creek has also worked with local community based organizations to re-plant indigenous bushes and grasses. 100% of plant based harvest waste is composted and put back into the property. Lightweight eco-glass is imported from Seattle to ensure that all wine packaging is sourced from the Pacific Northwest.
