This is the 3rd vintage of our Oldfield Series Rose. Made in very, very limited quantities in previous years production was increased slightly in 2011 due to a colder than normal growing season. With the cooler season we saw an opportunity to produce a fantastic Cabernet Franc Rose in June and immediately set aside 2 blocks of our Cabernet Franc just for the Rose.

The 2011 Oldfield Series Rose is 100% Cabernet Franc from our Diamondback Vineyard on the Black Sage Bench. It will only be available from the winery and in a few restaurants.

Vineyard Notes

The 2011 Oldfield Series Rose is 100% Cabernet Franc. Because of the cool season; a Cabernet Franc block that usually produces a smaller crop was selected for our Rose. The cool season was overcome using a combination of canopy management techniques. Crop thinning and leaf removal helped to ensure fully ripe bunches, both in tannins and fruit structure.

Winemaker Notes

This wine is made from 100% Cabernet Franc. It will be a dry wine with light salmon pink in colour and have strawberry aromas and flavours with a hint of black pepper. The grapes are pressed off their skins allowing for the right amount of colour to be released. Cold fermented in Stainless Steel tanks without ML ensures the fruity aromas and flavours are preserved. This wine is made in a style that can be enjoyed on its own or good with light summer foods.

Fantastic summer sipper; this is a rosé in the lines of a Anjou style, meaning its lighter in body, some red fruit notes, and spicy / peppery. If you want something overly sweet, this isn't the rosé for you. I gave it 5 stars based on the price I paid - bought during the July 1 sale which provided free shipping and multiple discounts via Crush Club membership and case purchase - at $23, I'd rate it 4 stars. Tasting notes: Tangy straweberry taste, big pepper hit, opens up and sweetens considerably if you serve it at around 10C temperature. The sweetness in the wine is diminished when too cold. Very balanced, goes with most proteins, esp. cold proteins like tartare and carpaccio.
