Sustainability

At Tinhorn Creek we have always been aware of the habitat around us and over the years have taken steps to help protect it. Our most well known conservation efforts include our snake fence and the protected areas of our property. Agreements with The Land Conservancy ensure that sensitive areas will not be developed.  These are only two areas in which we work to protect the habitat around the winery. Over the years we have implemented many other sustainability practices in and around the winery.

In the vineyard

• Because we are in a desert climate, fungicide, pesticide and herbicide sprays are minimal compared to wetter viticultural areas in the world.

Habitat Surrounding our Winery

• No toxic baits or fumigants are used to control vertebrate pests in our vineyards. Instead we modify their habitat (such as removing unnecessary brush and rocks) and use exclusion techniques (such as snake fencing, deer fencing, netting and sound repellents for birds).

Pomace pile at the edge of our vineyardWinery Cellar and Grounds

• All grape pomace (seeds, skins and stems during harvest) are composted on site for direct application to our vineyards.

Packaging and Shipping

• Our wine bottles are made from 35-50% recycled glass and 90% of our glass is produced within 500 kilometers of our winery. All our glass comes in on full truckloads to reduce our carbon footprint.
